Today in class we are getting our new direction for the next unit on biomes. We will be doing our objectives, driving questions and problem statements as well as our knows and our need to knows. We will also be introducing prezis to the science classes. To me a Prezi is a powerpoint on steroids. They are really fun to make. The kids will have a blast learning the new information and creating one to share with the world!
Yes it is cold and yes we will survive! We are thankful for our heaters in our classrooms and cannot wait for the heat to work in the gyms!

Today in class, the students are wrapping up their Unit 5 Space Accommodations unit by taking an assessment via socrative.
After the assessment they will be participating in an Hour of Code. There will be millions of students participating in this across America, if not the world. This is a great initial activity in seeing the students learn so much more beyond our classroom walls. It will be exciting to see their creations. The Hour of Code is also something that they can work on outside if class. Our age group is age 5 to 7 years old. We are responsible for purchasing new unwrapped toys for them. We are also responsible for bring canned foods.
We have until Dec. 12. If we bring the most we WIN POPCORN!!!! Today we took a day off from our next unit to begin looking at our science fair in May. Some were saying, "why are we doing this if it doesn't happen until May?" After my experiences with it last year, I realized we need to begin on it as early as possible. Spring time is very busy and the more work we get done along the way makes the process that much easier.
I will give them periodic rubrics that have the information that is due and when it will be due. There will also be a place for parent signatures to ensure that the parents are not surprised by the due dates or any of the events involved with them. The kids are excited once again and it excites me seeing them "wanting" to learn, aks questions and answer them as well. Today we are transitioning out of space accommodations unit. We are taking time to look at our presentation rubrics. Learning what being "dressed for success" looks like.
Also, we are talking about our successes and failures of working with other group members. They are seeing what it means to work together and deal with being led, being held accountable and responsible for the work they are to do. I am seeing tremendous growth. The students are genuinely grasping information and being able to re state what they are learning. We are heading into researching biomes next. This will be a fun one. They will be researching biomes and compiling information to use to understand what plants/animals are specific to each one and then which are endangered. As the rubrics and info sheets are created they will be added to the homework page. Today they started vocab for unit 6. I want to thank the visitors that we had show up for our presentations. While they are short, the students have plenty of time to share their knowledge. The visitors that ask questions are the best!!! We have survived Thanksgiving!!! I know that we are all thankful for a break. Time away from school, and to be with family.
We have been researching space. It has been so much fun! This is my most limited subject and I have learned more in researching with the kids these last couple of weeks. They keep finding fun facts to share that they are learning! I love that! The kids are very eager and are managing taking control of their learning fairly well. There are some bumps along the way and the kids are learning that they will survive but they must put in the time and work. This week we are finishing up our research on accommodations for space. They have learned about space food, slingshot effect, how microgravity affects the body and the most fun part of all waste management! It has been a blast having the kids research how astronauts use the restroom in space. They have the "option" of making a model that represents some of the things they have been learning. These presentations will be done tomorrow Tues 12/4 during their science class. These will be no longer than 5 minutes long. Parents are welcome to come and observe just make sure and check in at the MS office. I hear one group even found some space ice cream to bring in. I'm a little scared of that-but excited at the same time.... come see us!!! :) |
