This year The 7th grade went entirely 1:1, using Chromebooks and we started using project base lessons and teaching. There have been many obstacles, questions and even fears faced during the new processes that we have taken on. I do believe that our students are taking back the power to learn- or at least been given it back. Many are taking it and running with it and loving the responsibility.
It is finally here. STAAR testing! I am anxious to see how our 7th graders do knowing that this year has been full of big changes for the students as well as the teachers.

Today was FCA Friday! I look forward to these days. They have been consistently showing up and participating in bringing food and the discussion! Since our first meeting we have been discussing the scripture from Col. 3:17, Whether in word or in deed, do it in the name of the Lord Jesus. We are focusing on our leadership skills. Just because we are on a team doesn't make us leaders. Just because we are starters doesn't make us leaders. If we are the fastest we aren't necessarily the best leaders. What makes a leader? This has been the discussion all year... From behavior in class, submitting homework, holding your tongue or your temper, we are learning that these all matter as far as qualities for leadership. Today, we listened to a song by Matthew West called, Do Something. We talked about when we see things that are "wrong" going on around us and how we react. Do we just let it go? Do we step in and intervene? This can apply to so many situations at school, home or with friends. How do we react when we see someone being bullied? How do we react with teammates not doing their work and failing class? According to the Song Do Something, when we ask the question, "who will do something?" or "God, won't you do something?", God has already answered. Read the lyrics: If not us, then who If not me and you Right now, it’s time for us to do something If not now, then when Will we see an end To all this pain It’s not enough to do nothing It’s time for us to do something I’m so tired of talking About how we are God’s hands and feet But it’s easier to say than to be Live like angels of apathy who tell ourselves It’s alright, “somebody else will do something” Well, I don’t know about you But I’m sick and tired of life with no desire I don’t want a flame, I want a fire I wanna be the one who stands up and says, “I’m gonna do something” My hope in talking leadership with students is that when they see something wrong in the world, they will react and DO SOMETHING. Don't wait on someone else. God has given us the ability to be His hands and feet. We must have the desire to be the one who stands up and says ,"I'M GONNA DO SOMETHING!" Had a ton of stories to post since before spring break but the motivation has been lacking. I keep thinking that I had better update or else people will be missing out on my blog.
One thing I noticed is that I really attempt to make my blog useful and accessible to others. People aren't missing it, I am. In reality, I learned that I blog for myself. It helps me to put down in writing what we are doing. What it looks like. Sharing the fun times or even sharing the not-so-fun times. Since before spring break my classes have been working on our research papers for our science fair projects. It has been a long and tedious process. There has been so much learning going on that it is scarey! These kids know how to operate in google docs-that's for sure! They have typed a paper and used the new add-on Easy Bib to do it. They have cited their sources and check their spelling and punctuation. They will be ready to rock their science fair projects. They will be beginning their trials and collecting data and building their boards. In all of this daily learning they will be ROCKING their Staar tests starting next week. Finishing up their track season and there is only 50 days left in school. It has been fun and exciting but there is still work to be done and we will do it! After we took our 'first' look at the unit test, we visited an observation lab to try and answer some questions that we still have about body systems and adaptations.
Today, we started comparing different adaptations. We compared bird bones, fish respiratory systems, and plant vascular systems. We got a good look at celery's xylem and phloem and learned how xylem takes water up and phloem sends glucose down from the leaves. We also checked out some chicken bones and saw how they were hollow inside. Tomorrow we will be viewing the respiratory system of fish. We will see how the obtain oxygen from water and what the purpose of the the gills are. After we wind this up we will be writing an essay over the differences in adaptations. WE ARE ALMOST TO SPRING BREAK!!! |
